We worked together to create a collection of brand photography that reflects Alison’s refined aesthetic and deep connection with her clients. Set in the beautiful town of Dunkeld, near Perth this shoot was not just about cakes. It was about storytelling and bringing a sophisticated brand to life through visuals.
Meet Alison: The Heart Behind Copper Rose Wedding Cakes
Alison, the owner of Copper Rose Wedding Cakes, crafts luxurious, contemporary, and elegant wedding cakes for couples getting married in Scotland. Her bespoke designs are created for couples who want something extra special. That want cakes that have special meaning and taste as amazing as they are beautiful.
A New Chapter: Elevating the Brand
At the start of the year, Alison made the exciting decision to invest in her brand. She was already working closely with a brand designer, getting her brand strategy and visual identity in order. She recognised that professional brand photography would be the final piece of the puzzle to bring her new brand to life.
Planning the Brand Photo Shoot: Listening, Understanding, Collaborating
Alison and I had several in-depth calls to discuss her brand, her process, and her vision for the shoot. I took time to understand how she works with her clients. We discussed the stories she wanted to tell, and the values that drive her business.
What stood out most was her heartfelt dedication to her couples. The way she weaves their unique love stories into her cake designs, and the care she takes to ensure every cake tastes as incredible as it looks.
Dunkeld, Perth as Inspiration: A Sense of Place
Alison lives in Dunkeld, a picturesque town near Perth, which is a wedding destination in its own right. It was clear that Dunkeld’s beauty and bounty of natural ingredients are a source of inspiration for Alison’s work. We knew that the setting itself needed to be part of the brand story.
Crafting the Story: Using more than one loaction
As part of the planning I created a brand mood board and pulled together more ideas for setting and shot types for the shoot. Together, we crafted this into six brand stories — three captured in Dunkeld and three at the stunning Guardswell Farm. Using different locations like this allowed us to go deeper and show the different aspects of Alison’s brand, because just like us, your brand is mulit faceted and layered.
A Creative Request: Developing the Visual Style
At one point during the process, Alison gently asked if I’d be open to adapting my editing style. I was genuinely pleased that she felt comfortable enough to ask this. So what was my response – tell me more!
Her vision? A pared-back, quietly elegant aesthetic. As Alison described the look and feel she was hoping for, I knew exactly how to achieve it. I’m not a one-trick pony. I love experimenting and playing with different techniques and settings.
Behind the Lens: A Soft, Dreamy Aesthetic
To create this aesthetic I used a rather unexpected tool — a pair of tights stretched over my lens. I know it sounds a bit strange, but this simple technique added a beautiful, hazy softness to the images. Creating a romantic, soft and film like feel, whilst also allowing me to control focus and highlight the areas I wanted to focus on.
It was exactly the dreamy, emotive look Alison was after — and it sparked a creativity and craving in me to do more shoots like this.
