I specialise in brand photography and interior photography in Perthshire and across Scotland, working with established creative businesses to create refined, story-led imagery.
So I was delighted to work on this brand photography and lifestyle shoot with The Original Chair Company, a Scottish furniture and interior design brand, on a project that was collaborative from start to finish.
Alongside photographing the collection, I was involved in sourcing the location, shaping the visual direction, and styling the space to ensure the images reflected the quality and aesthetic of the brand. By combining interior photography, lifestyle furniture photography and personal brand photography, we created a versatile image library designed to work across their website, marketing and wider brand presence.
Kate MacKenzie has built a reputable furniture and interior design business over many years. As the brand evolved, with new designs and a new direction, Kate was preparing for a rebrand and needed imagery that would sit confidently alongside new branding and a new website.
.

It quickly became apparent that the studio showroom space wasn’t going to give the sense of quality and elegance the brand deserved. While functional, it didn’t provide the visual context needed to showcase the furniture at its best.
We needed a location that would act as a considered backdrop — allowing the furniture pieces to shine while reinforcing the brand’s positioning as a high-quality furniture and interior design brand in Scotland.
I keep a short list of locations that I know photograph beautifully and offer flexibility for different brands. One location just outside Blairgowrie felt like a natural fit, so Kate and I visited it together ahead of the shoot.
The rooms had tall ceilings, large windows and beautiful natural light. The proportions worked well for larger furniture pieces, and we had access to a selection of props that would support styling. We knew straight away we could create something special there.

.
Ahead of the shoot, Kate shared full details of the furniture pieces, including colours and finishes. This allowed us to plan each setup in advance and think carefully about how each piece would be styled within the space.
I also worked closely with Kate’s marketing manager and website designer to ensure everyone was aligned on the visual direction. This meant the images wouldn’t just look good — they would work practically for the new website and future brand marketing and content creation.

.
As with all my shoots, a lot of planning happens before the camera comes out. That preparation allows the shoot day itself to run smoothly — although there are always a few unexpected moments. On this occasion, that included a late delivery van, furniture wrapped like Fort Knox, and taking the time needed to get the styling just right.
Once everything was in place, we moved through the different setups with ease.
For the lifestyle images, I always like to include a human element. I suggested Kate bring a friend to act as a client so we could create a relaxed, natural meeting scene. This is also where Mabel made her debut, and did a fantastic job as a model dog. These images feel personal and help viewers connect emotionally with the space.
When planning lifestyle imagery, I’m always thinking about the ideal client. Items such as magazines, coffee, books and artwork help set the tone and create scenes that feel aspirational but believable.
.

.
The furniture was, of course, the focus of the shoot. We created four main setups that placed each piece within the context of the room, capturing them in a way that felt considered and timeless. Alongside this, I photographed detailed close-ups to highlight texture, craftsmanship and quality.
After a little persuasion, Kate also saw the value in updating her personal brand images. She had been using photographs taken several years ago, and this felt like the right time to refresh them. It was also an opportunity to include Sarah, Kate’s right-hand woman and an integral part of the business.
One of the furniture pieces — the Philip Arthur chair — became a focal point for these images. Inspired by Kate’s grandfather’s armchair, the design was shown in a contemporary way using a beautiful fabric, tying personal story into the visuals.

.
This shoot provided Kate with a strong, cohesive collection of images that can be used across her website and marketing for months to come — supporting both the rebrand and future content.
As Kate shared afterwards:
“From start to finish, Katie was professional, relaxed, and so easy to work with. She captured our new furniture collection beautifully and gave us exactly what we needed for both rebranding and personal shots. Looking forward to working with her on the next one.”
